Debunking Venezuelan Celebration Footage and AI-Generated Pictures of Nicolás Maduro.

Computer-created images purporting to depict Venezuela's president detained following his capture by the American authorities have garnered tens of millions of impressions online.

The Way AI Images of the President Appeared Rapidly

The first fake synthetic picture seemingly showing him taken off a plane circulated a brief time later. The graphic was unpublished by any official American sources; it was instead uploaded on X by an account purporting to be an “AI video art enthusiast”.

We’ve checked Google’s SynthID, confirming the picture was produced or modified with generative AI.

More AI-generated visuals were disseminated in the ensuing hours, seemingly depicting additional perspectives of Maduro under guard. Discernible watermarks on these images indicate they came from an Instagram profile called ultravfx.

AI analysis indicates the further pictures were similarly produced using Google AI.

Authentic Image Posted but Fakes Continued

Donald Trump posted the initial authentic image of Maduro restrained aboard the USS Iwo Jima on Saturday morning. But even after this real photo was made public, synthetic pictures persisted online but were updated to show the gray sweatsuit worn by Maduro.

Online investigation reveal these altered fabrications were initially shared on TikTok by a digital art profile. Again, SynthID confirms these further images were produced with generative artificial intelligence.

Main Takeaways:

  • Deepfakes spread rapidly after the news of Maduro's capture.
  • The initial fabricated image appeared on the same day on social media.
  • Tools like AI-watermark detectors helped to verify the pictures as AI-generated.
  • Fake images persisted to spread and evolve even after the release of real images.
  • The origin of several fabricated images was linked to social media profiles focused on graphic design.
