Exploring this Connection Between Memes, Gaming and Internet Culture in the Charlie Kirk Assassination
Welcome to our analysis of the ways in which internet culture, memes and video game culture connected in the shocking shooting of conservative figure Charlie Kirk.
A Bullet Message and The Online Roots
The bullet found at the location featured a message that stated: “Spots protrusion UwU whats that?” This expression is widely recognized within online communities as a troll nod to anthropomorphic enthusiasts, a community that engages in cosplay as creature figures.
“This expression was popularized both as a method of mocking furries and associated communities, and has also been embraced by members as a means of owning the meme,” explains a well-known online culture website. “Ultimately, it is seen in online humor as one of the very awkward remarks a person could potentially write to another.”
Other Evidence Suggesting to Online Culture
Law enforcement found additional bullet casings with etched messages that appeared to reference video game communities and niche memes. A said: “Oh Bella Ciao, Bella Ciao”, a folk anti-fascist anthem that has gained popularity in gaming circles. A second message stated: “Should you see this, you must be homosexual, LMAO.” That line is often described as standard “provocative speak” within internet conversation.
One last casing included the phrase: “Hey authoritarian! Take this!” accompanied by an arrow pattern that seems to reference commands from the video game Helldivers 2, specifically those used to release a powerful bomb in the title.
The Alleged Perpetrator and Target
The accused assailant, a 22-year-old from a small town, is charged of firing a one bullet from a high-powered firearm at Charlie Kirk during a campus event in Orem. Kirk, aged 31, was a prominent figure within conservative circles and headed the youth group Turning Point USA. His rise to fame was significantly supported by his strong digital presence.
One key player in right-wing politics, Kirk mobilized young supporters who existed in a separate ecosystem from traditional outlets. The ten-year period between Kirk’s start as a teen activist and the shooting witnessed the growth of Make America Great Again politics alongside a shift in the media industry, with him playing a crucial part in both.
Meta Whistleblowers Keep to Step Public
In separate news, Meta faced additional insider claims last week. One group of six former and current employees allege the company covered up harm to children on its Metaverse devices. Another former executive, the ex-head of security for WhatsApp, states that significant safety and data issues were ignored within the communication application.
As response, a company representative stated that the company has approved over 180 studies pertaining to VR wellbeing since 2022, including analysis on young security. The representative added that features have been added to reduce unwanted contact and offer parental supervision controls.
The is far from the first instance Meta has been subject to internal disclosures. Previous employees have spoken out regarding concerns varying from political manipulation to harm to adolescent wellbeing.
US politicians are approaching the claims seriously. Politicians from both sides have expressed support for overseeing social media firms and other tech companies.
“These details in these reports are difficult to accept – because they show such significant dangers to children’s welfare,” commented one senator. “Yet again, the company is revealed to be willfully downplaying problems on its platforms. See no evil, say no evil, see no evil’ is simply not an suitable business approach.”
A official added that they and others were planning to push forward with “long overdue change” in response to the ongoing revelations.
